IUD placement

At our practice, we offer placement of the following IUDs:

  • T-Safe copper IUD
This is a T-shaped, hormone-free IUD that provides effective contraception for up to 10 years. According to the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG), T-Safe is the most reliable copper IUD and the most commonly used in the Netherlands.
    Cost: €85,06
  • Multi-Safe (short) copper IUD
The Multi-Safe is a horseshoe-shaped copper IUD. The short version is smaller and suitable for women with a smaller uterus. Both versions are effective for 5 years. Together with T-Safe, the Multi-Safe is recommended by the NHG.
    Cost: €61,78
  • Flexi-T copper IUD
The Flexi-T is a T-shaped IUD with rounded corners, made of plastic and copper. There are three types: the Flexi-T 300 for a smaller uterus, and the Flexi-T +380 and +300 for larger uteruses. The +380 contains more copper to increase effectiveness. Flexi-T IUDs are effective for 5 years.
    Cost: €58,24
  • Mirena hormonal IUD
This hormone-releasing IUD provides reliable contraception for up to 8 years. It may alter your menstrual pattern or even stop menstruation altogether.
    Cost: approx. €150,-
  • Kyleena hormonal IUD
This is a hormonal IUD that provides contraception for 5 years. It’s slightly smaller than the Mirena and contains a lower hormone dose. Its effectiveness is otherwise comparable.
    Cost: approx. €150,-

When can an IUD be placed?

An IUD can be placed from 10 weeks after giving birth. After a cesarean section, placement is possible from 12 weeks postpartum.

Making an appointment for placement

You can book an appointment for IUD placement by calling our practice.

Placement costs

The cost for IUD placement is €77.85. These costs may be reimbursed by your health insurance provider. Please note that not all insurers reimburse the full amount, and some or all of it may go towards your deductible. This depends on your insurance policy.
Note: Women over the age of 21 are not reimbursed for the cost of the contraceptive device itself under the basic insurance, unless they have additional coverage.

How is an IUD placed?

A speculum is used to make the cervix visible. The uterus is then measured, and the IUD is inserted. The actual placement only takes a few minutes. After placement, a follow-up (usually a phone call) is scheduled about 6 weeks later.

STIs and pregnancy

Before placing an IUD, it’s important to be sure there is no risk of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or pregnancy. Use protection (such as condoms) until the IUD is placed. If you’re unsure, feel free to discuss this with us. We can also perform an STI test at the practice if needed.

Follow-up check

About 6 weeks after placement, we schedule a (phone) check-up. We make sure the IUD is correctly positioned and address any questions or concerns. You can also check the placement yourself; we will explain how to do this after insertion.
