When to call in the final weeks

Approximately four weeks before your due date, we will discuss the upcoming delivery during one of your pregnancy checkups. Additionally, we will inform you when to call us. The reasons to call us are different for everyone. They depend on your care plan and on your personal needs.

If you are worried or have concerns, please contact us. You can always check in early or we can reassure you.

Emergencies, childbirth and concerns

You can call the midwife on duty for assistance with childbirth and emergencies.

If your delivery starts between 37 and 42 weeks pregnant, call us in case of:

Persistent abdominal pain, fluid and blood loss and if you are otherwise concerned about pregnancy and the baby.

Contractions

If it is your first child: frequent contractions for an hour, with a pause of 3 to 4 minutes between the contractions.
If you have had children before, you will recognize the contractions. Call us when you have frequent powerful contractions every 5 minutes for half an hour.

Blood loss

You might lose your cervical mucus plug before the delivery. It is not necessary to call us if this happens.
Call us immediately, if you lose a lot of bright red blood before or during the delivery.

Amniotic fluid

If your water breaks at night and the color is normal (clear, white or pink), call us in the morning after 09:00. You don't have to call during the night.
If the amniotic fluid is green or brown, it is possible that the baby defecated in the amniotic fluid. In that case, please call us straight away, even in the middle of the night..
Always call us if your water breaks and the baby's head is not engaged.
