If the result of your pregnancy test is positive, you can call us to make a first appointment. You can also register by filling in the digital registration form on our website. A first appointment usually takes place when you are between 8 and 10 weeks pregnant, but we can schedule your first appointment a little earlier if you prefer.
Before your first appointment with one of the midwives, you can make an appointment for a first ultrasound at our midwifery practice on the Scheveningseweg (on Monday, Wednesday evening or Thursday). The first ultrasound can be made when you are between 8 and 10 weeks pregnant (counting from the first day of your last period). The ultrasound technician will check the baby’s heartbeat and determine whether the pregnancy takes place in the uterus. This ultrasound lasts approximately 15 minutes.
The main purpose of the first appointment is to get to know each other, which is why we will ask you a lot of questions. The answers to these questions will help us to make a custom-made obstetric care plan for you. The first checkup will take about 60 minutes. We find it important to discuss your goals, wishes, expectations and maybe even fears. Midwives are bound by medical confidentiality and, therefore, what you tell us will never leave the practice without your permission.
We will ask you about your health and your medical history. Are you using medication, and if so, which type of medication? The health of the baby’s father is also important. If you have been pregnant before, we will ask you about the course of that pregnancy. If you have any documentation of this previous pregnancy, please bring it with you to your first appointment. If you were registered at our practice before, this is not necessary.
We will discuss whether there are any genetic diseases or congenital physical and/or mental illnesses in your family. If there are, it is possible for you to consult a geneticist.
Your due date is usually determined during the first ultrasound, which is also known as the dating ultrasound. The dating ultrasound will take place when you are between 10 and 12 weeks pregnant. The appointment for the ultrasound can be scheduled on a Monday, Wednesday evening or Thursday at our midwifery practice at the Scheveningseweg. Our ultrasound technicians are from STAR-SHL-group (a collective of health care professionals). They are all-round ultrasound technicians, which means that they also do ultrasounds for women who are 20 weeks pregnant.
If you prefer to have your dating ultrasound on another day in the week, we will refer you to the ultrasound centre: echocentrum 'Het Haagse Hof' or to one of the hospitals in The Hague.
Together with your dating scan we perform a blood test. Your blood will be tested for:

If you want a NIPT as screening test the ultrasound technician will take extra vials of blood in the same prick.
We will discuss your menstrual cycle in order to determine your due date. Using the first day of your last period as a starting point, we will calculate how far along you are in your pregnancy. The actual fertilisation took place approximately two weeks after the first day of your last period. The duration of a pregnancy is 40 weeks on average, including those two weeks before the fertilisation. Based on the outcome of the calculations, we can schedule your dating ultrasound.

Your body will undergo big changes during your pregnancy. We will schedule regular pregnancy checkups to determine whether these physical changes correspond to the normal course of pregnancy. Your health is the main focus of our care.
During every checkup, we will review the health status of you and your baby, and we will determine what you need for a healthy pregnancy. The information and advice that we give you will be straightforward, honest, and custom-made, and together we will do a risk analysis. If there are any complications, we might refer you to your GP or a gynecologist.
You will have regular pregnancy checkups during your pregnancy. At first these checkups will be once a month, later on in the pregnancy they will be more frequent. These checkups are intended to monitor both your health and the development and growth of the baby. During the checkups, we will gradually get to know you better, and build a relationship of trust. This relationship will facilitate a good preparation for the delivery, and will hopefully allow you to ask us any questions, even if they are difficult or intimate.
We will schedule a home visit at 36 weeks pregnant for women who want to have a home birth.
Together with your dating scan we perform a blood test. Your blood will be tested for:
